City of Monroe Inspections

The City of Monroe Inspections Office offers Building Permits, Certificates of Occupancy, and Occupational Licenses. The Inspections Office also helps businesses complete the steps necessary to obtain these documents.

The City of Monroe Inspections Office offers Building Permits to new and existing businesses. Building Permits are required for new construction and renovations. For an already existing building, a business owner should contact the City of Monroe Planning and Zoning Office to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy. Once a Certificate of Occupancy has been obtained, the owner should contact the Inspections Office to schedule a time for a representative from the Fire Department and Inspections Office to inspect the structure. After the inspection, the owner will receive a form which should be brought to the Taxation and Revenue Department to obtain an Occupational License. Businesses who wish to build a new structure should obtain a Certificate of Occupancy from the Planning and Zoning Office. The owner will receive a Building Permit when the plans have been submitted to and approved by the State Fire Marshall. Building permits are also required for electrical, HV/AC, plumbing, roofing, and sprinkler system renovations. Each permit requires a specific fee which is determined by the size and type of project. The Inspections Office is open from 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday.
