American Royal Association

The American Royal is a non-profit organization based in Kansas City since 1899. We provide opportunities for youth and adults from around the country to compete in our Livestock Show, ProRodeo, and Horse Shows. Many people know us for our World Series of Barbecue®, which is actually our largest fundraiser. Events including the barbecue allow us to give over $1 million annually for youth scholarships and support agriculture education programs.

About

The American Royal is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Kansas City since October 1899. We began as the National Hereford Show, the first nationwide show for the exposition and sale of purebred cattle. The first official American Royal Horse Show occurred in 1905 with the help of prominent horse trainer Tom Bass.

Today, we provide opportunities for youth and adults from around the country to compete in our Livestock Show, ProRodeo, and Horse Shows. Many people know us for our World Series of Barbecue®, which is actually our largest fundraiser. Events including the barbecue allow us to give over $1 million annually for youth scholarships and support agriculture education programs. As a non-profit community volunteer based organization, the American Royal raises funds to fulfill its vision and mission though endowments, contributions, sponsorships, and event revenues.

As an organization dedicated to youth and education, the American Royal reached more than 18,000 students through educational programs, events and outreach events including the American Royal Museum, School Tours, AgSTEM Explorer, Youth Leadership Day, Neighborhood Schools program and various other programs. Our partnerships with local elementary and middle schools have allowed us to create thousands of agricultural education impressions during the school year. In 2018, more than 109 scholarships were awarded to individuals and teams. Scholarships were awarded for high school and collegiate judging contests, livestock and equine competitive events, and academic excellence for college and veterinary students.

Growth of the American Royal’s education programs is paramount to the ongoing success of our growing organization. As we look to a future in a new state-of-the-art facility and education center, relationships with students, parents, teachers, and allied industry will be critical.

Connecting students and educators to the relevance of food and agriculture is a goal of the American Royal organization. Agriculture’s future is our future and it is fueled by the vision, dreams, and passions of all involved. This region is abundantly blessed with natural resources, and for the American Royal, our greatest natural resource is the young people who will be involved in our industry.
