The challenge
A rural state with strong partners and no single path.
Before statewide IASourceLink, entrepreneurs often pieced together answers through friends, web searches, SBDC counselors, state offices, and whatever local contact they already knew. That was hard anywhere. In Iowa, with a population spread across a largely rural state, distance made the search even harder.
The ecosystem was not empty. Central Iowa SourceLink served a nine-county region. UNI's MyEntre.Net work in Iowa had a resource database, a business concierge program, webinars, and partner relationships. But the pieces had to become one cohesive statewide system that could scale beyond local bespoke tools.
The approach
A technology platform with human capital around it.
The Iowa Economic Development Authority wanted a statewide platform, but the partners understood that software alone would not build an ecosystem. The University of Northern Iowa brought marketing, outreach, web content, and ongoing quality control. IEDA brought statewide sponsorship, credibility, and a network-building role inside the state's economic development structure.
That partnership deployed the full SourceLink affiliate package: a SiteConnex website, the Resource Navigator, and the SourceLink Pro CRM. IASourceLink also adapted a separate Resource Navigator license into a business license and permitting directory, giving entrepreneurs one trusted place to find startup requirements and next-step support.

The statewide model paired a shared technology stack with recurring outreach, partner meetings, and active content maintenance.
The results
A statewide resource that can show reach, referrals, and trust.
There was always clarity about one thing: there was no before-and-after metric because there was no statewide baseline before the system existed. That absence is part of the point. SourceLink gave IASourceLink a way to see and describe work that had previously been fragmented across people, websites, phone calls, and local relationships.
Since going live, the network has served more than 20,000 entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs from every one of Iowa's 99 counties have used the system, and people from 43 states have found IASourceLink content when looking for business help. Rob estimated the network now includes almost 400 support organizations, with typical inquiries receiving three to five referrals or connections.
The numbers also changed partner conversations. At quarterly Entrepreneur Roundtable meetings, Rob could show specific referrals made to specific organizations. That gave participating entrepreneurship support organizations concrete proof that the system was not just promoting collaboration. It was sending them clients they could help.
What's next
Keeping trusted guidance current as search changes.
IASourceLink's next push is to make startup guidance easier to maintain and easier for partners to share. Patrick described a white-labeled set of "how to start a business in Iowa" materials that can live with SBDC, SBA, local economic development, chambers, Main Streets, and other partners while IASourceLink keeps the core information current.
The team is also adapting to AI-driven search behavior. IASourceLink already has a chatbot layer that points entrepreneurs to resource partners, and Patrick sees the Resource Navigator moving toward a more conversational front end. The goal is the same one IASourceLink started with: help the entrepreneur get to the right person faster, even when the way people search for help changes.
